2016 Unity Gong Relay from Kalinga to Apayao
The ceremonial turnover of the “GONG” at Pinukpuk-Conner boundary for this year’s Unity Gong Relay.
The Unity Gong Relay between Kalinga and Apayao commenced with a turnover program at Pinukpuk-Conner boundary on July 11, 2016.
The turnover was steered by Kalinga Governor Jocel Collado Baac and Conner Mayor Leonardo Dangoy, witnessed by local government officials and heads of national line agencies and functionaries.
A formal turnover program followed at Aliwa Gymnasium, Luna, Apayao where Governor Elias C. Bulut, Jr. and Provincial and Municipal Officials of Apayao gladly accepted the “GONG” from Regional Development Council Officials together with the Provincial and City/Municipal Officials of Kalinga. DSWD Regional Director Janet P. Armas talked on the rationale of the Unity Gong Relay which signifies the continued unity of the six provinces and cities of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to continuously improve and strengthen their commitment towards full autonomy.
This year’s Unity Gong Relay started with a kick-off program from this year's host, the City of Baguio, followed a turnover program at Lagawe, Ifugao and another turnover program at Tabuk, Kalinga. Series of relays ensued in Abra, Mt. Province, Benguet and finally in the City of Baguio.
The Unity Gong Relay is a yearly ritual of the Cordilleran spearheaded by Chief Executives of all the Provinces of CAR which involves a series of relay or turnover of the “GONG” from one province to another. The round metal gong of the Cordillera known locally as “GANGSA” is a symbol of the upland people’s culture that has been passed on from generations
