Several colonies of giant fruit bats, commonly known as flying foxes, were recorded during a biodiversity monitoring activity conducted by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Calanasan, with support from the Provincial Government of Apayao and the Local Government Unit of Flora.

The survey confirmed the presence of the species in identified sites, providing data used to assess habitat condition and guide conservation work. Flying foxes play a role in seed dispersal and serve as prey for predators such as the Philippine eagle, making them an indicator of functioning forest ecosystems.
No Philippine eagle was sighted during the activity, but a local guide reported hearing its call within the area.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Cordillera said field observations from monitoring activities help verify the presence of wildlife in remote areas and inform protection measures.
A follow-up expedition is scheduled this May to track a known Philippine eagle in the area, in coordination with the Philippine Eagle Foundation.
