More than a ton of waste was removed from the Tumog River on August 27 as 608 participants worked along a 40.17-kilometer section of the waterway from upstream to downstream.
The simultaneous cleanup collected 1,103.561 kilograms of waste. Of this, 538.78 kg were recyclables, 59.151 kg were residual materials with potential for recycling, 134.07 kg were classified as special waste, and 371.56 kg were residual waste for disposal.
The activity covered Dagupan, Salvacion, Shalom, Bacsay, San Gregorio, Turod, Sta. Lina, San Francisco, Tumog, San Jose, and Quirino, the barangays traversed by the river.
The cleanup is part of preparations for the Tumog River’s nomination to the Recognizing Individuals/Institutions Towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (R.I.V.E.Rs) for Life Award.
The DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office and CENRO Calanasan led the activity, with personnel and volunteers from government agencies, local government units, barangays, schools, private organizations, and civic groups deployed to different sections of the river.
The volume of waste collected during the one-day operation also puts attention on the continuing problem of garbage entering the river system and the need to keep cleanup and proper waste disposal efforts going beyond the award nomination.
