A Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle (Pelochelys cantorii), one of the world’s rarest freshwater turtles, was recently recovered along the Apayao River in Pudtol after it was accidentally caught by a resident while fishing.
Instead of keeping the animal, the resident immediately turned it over to authorities. The quick decision allowed wildlife personnel to secure the turtle and check its condition.

The rescue was carried out by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – CENRO Calanasan with the support of the Local Government of Pudtol. The turtle was first examined by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) before it was transported to a veterinary clinic in Laoag City. Veterinarians Christopher George N. Galvez and Mary Jane A. Galvez later conducted a full medical check.

During the examination, the turtle was found to be carrying eggs, a sign that the species continues to breed within the Apayao River system.
The Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle is classified as Critically Endangered and is included in the country’s list of threatened wildlife under DENR Administrative Order 2019-09.
Its presence in the river points to the continuing ecological value of the Biosphere Reserve of the yApayaos (BRyA), where river habitats remain capable of supporting rare wildlife.
OIC CENR Officer Dorothy Cayaba reminded residents that wildlife accidentally caught in rivers or forests should be reported and turned over to authorities so they can be properly assessed and returned to their habitat.
